Replacing light fixtures to help the disadvantaged

Lights account for 24% of the electricity consumed in residential buildings in Hong Kong, the second highest after air conditioning. Good public lighting does not only create a safer environment for residents by acting as a strong defence against crime but also enhance energy efficiency. SHKP has recently replaced the light fixtures in some 'three nil' buildings for free, showing care for the community.

There are many 'three nil' buildings - no owners' corporations, no residents' organisations and no property management companies - situated in old urban districts with relatively low rent attracting low-income residents. The common areas of these buildings generally lack proper management and maintenance which lead to dim environments, posing threat to the elderly and opening door to crime. SHKP's Building Homes with Heart Caring Initiative recently collaborated with the Environmental Association to sponsor energy-saving, cost efficient LED illumination in nine 'three nil' buildings in Tai Po and replace perished wires in order to reduce the risk of short circuits and leakage and to better safeguard lives and property of the less fortunate.
