Happy reading

With a strong commitment in promoting reading and all-round development, SHKP encourages children and young people to cultivate good reading habits from an early age and make reading a part of daily life so they can enjoy books and enhance mutual communication. Established by SHKP, the SHKP Reading Club recently held a number of cultural activities to promote reading for enjoyment in Hong Kong.

Insights sharing by overseas author

Spending time reading with children is a wonderful way for parents to communicate with their kids. It is even better if they are reading their children's writing – it brings tremendous happiness and satisfaction for the little ones! The SHKP Reading Club had noted British children's author Alan Gibbons at the sky100 Hong Kong Observation Deck in mid March to talk about ways to help children develop an interest in writing. Alan pointed out that parents and children reading allows them to easily share life philosophies and fun, and if the child gets enjoyment from reading and writing they will naturally develop good habits. There were places reserved for SHKP Club members so they could learn how to make parent-child reading sessions a family routine.

Introducing books from around the world

SHKP Reading Club and Roundtable are publishing a free ReadIt magazine to promote the message of "reading is enriching". The magazine introduces books from Hong Kong and around the world to develop a reading habit so that the public, especially students and young people, can enrich their minds. The cover story in the first issue is "James Wong's pleasure reading area". It takes the reader into James Wong's study to enjoy the library of the father of Hong Kong pop music. Free copies of ReadIt are available in SHKP malls, the sky100 Hong Kong Observation Deck and Joint Publishing (HK) stores.

Write a letter to your family

A sincere, touching letter can express thoughts of love for friends and family well. The SHKP Reading Club is holding a second "A Letter to My Family" SHKP Book Review Competition. The idea is that by reading good books and writing letters, drawing pictures or other forms of personal interaction with family people will be encouraged to communicate more and enhance family bonds. Anyone aged six or over is welcome to enter the competition. The closing date for entries is May 31.
