Beautifying green space for the elderly

People accustomed to the fast pace of city living may not notice the green space around, but that greenery can be a source of happiness for people who live in homes for the elderly.

Inter-departmental collaboration

The SHKP Volunteer Team and Helping Hand started the SHKP Greenery Project for Cheung Muk Tau Holiday Centre last year and the second phase of the project was just completed. Designers at SHKP's Sanfield Landscape volunteered to come up with ideas to create a more pleasant living environment for people living at the centre by beautifying the gardens. It was nicely done by combining the volunteers' expertise in garden management, horticultural skills and the spirit of cooperation.

Building family ties by volunteering

Leung Cheuk-sun volunteered for the project and said it was the hardest work he had done since becoming an SHKP volunteer, but the smiles on the faces of the elderly gave him and his wife immense satisfaction. Some other volunteers brought their siblings to help turning the soil and adding fertilizer. There was great teamwork and it was a good chance to build family ties.
