Amanda Fung - Harmonious family starts with interior design

Living space per capita is relatively limited in densely-populated Hong Kong. It makes comfortable interior design even more important.

According to Amanda Fung, winner of the Asia Pacific Interior Design Award, sensible home design can make life comfortable and thereby benefit family communication. So it is the first step towards harmonious family.

She said that a beautiful design offers a nice atmosphere for communication. "Residential units in Hong Kong have sitting and dining rooms, but a family room or something similar, to let the whole family stay together, can be considered also. More common space like this will encourage family members to get closer together. Otherwise, family members will tend to stay in their own rooms."

Happy home design for stronger sense of belonging

Home design should reflect the characters of the family. It's not about blind adherence to trends, said Amanda, but successful design should respect the inhabitants' needs and habits, in order to make people feel really at home. "For example, if someone likes cooking, consider a semi-open kitchen so that they can chat with you while cooking." Meanwhile, various cozy designs offer a strong sense of belonging. "For example, using warm tone or colour contrasts, wallpapers and carpet can harmonize your home."

Relaxing in private time

Like many people, Amanda spends most of her time on work. But while many of us will be dying for sleep after a day of hard work, Amanda chooses to do some of her favourite hobbies like watching TV, listening to music or playing with her pet cat for relaxation.
