Career expo to recruit talent

SHKP held its largest ever career expo and announced the SHKP SDU – Trainee Programme to boost employment in Hong Kong. The expo was to help young people make the first important step in society or for middle-aged people looking for an opportunity to switch careers. The event drew an exceptional response attracting a large number of job seekers.

Injecting positive energy into the community

SHKP and the Construction Industry Council, Employees Retraining Board, Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and Vocational Training Council collaborated to organize the large-scale recruitment event to fill more than 1,000 jobs for SHKP's business development. The expo featured positions in eight SHKP business sectors spanning property development, construction, property management, hotels, telecommunications, information technology, retail and transport infrastructure all over 18 districts in Hong Kong. Many interviews were conducted on the spot and a number of verbal offers were made. Job seekers could also gain a better understanding of SHKP's business with a line-up of special activities at the expo including talks giving relevant industry information, analysis of development prospects, training workshops and advice on career direction.

Helping career starters make their first move

SHKP also collaborated with the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and the Youth Employment and Training Programme under the Labour Department to initiate the first employment training program specifically designed for over 50 sub-degree graduates. The programme provides fresh associate degree or higher diploma graduates with one year of training and employment in one of SHKP's business units such as property development, construction, property management, hotel, information technology or transport infrastructure as trainees. Systematic training will help trainees enhance their professional skills and knowledge, and those showing outstanding performance will have priority of employment after the training.

Helping youth map out a life path

SHKP has a track record in injecting positive energy into the community and providing career development opportunities. Our construction arm, Sanfield Construction, has been part of the Vocational Training Council’s Apprenticeship Training scheme since 1977. Participants in the scheme learn theoretical knowledge and receive three or four years of on-the-job training in SHKP's Construction Department. From reading blueprints, pouring concrete, plastering, decorating, conducting building inspection and handover, apprentices get a good overview of construction management. Participants who perform well in the programme and pass job interviews will be hired as full-time staff.

SHKP has also collaborated with Breakthrough since 2003 to offer the Modern Apprenticeship job training programme as an alternative path to further education for youth who have completed Secondary School education. More than 160 youngsters have graduated from the programme to date. The programme takes in more than 20 students at a time and includes SHKP employees acting as mentors one on one. Mentors impart the students with their experience in the workplace and attitudes in life, and help them discover their potential so that they can gain the confidence and correct values needed for the life journey ahead.
