Fulfilling aspirations

Deng Xin and Wei Huiying both won scholarships from the SHKP-Kwoks' Foundation to study for four-year undergraduate degrees at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The women are fulfilling their dreams and embarking on a new stage in life.

The SHKP-Kwoks' Foundation gave scholarships to enable six talent mainland students to study in Hong Kong last year. A separate programme run by the Foundation has been supporting 30 outstanding mainland students to study in Zhongshan University in Guangzhou every year since 2000. The programme has disbursed about 300 million yuan in aid to over 100 students so far.

International outlook

When Deng Xin first came to Hong Kong, the 18-year-old business administration student from Wuhan faced challenges in her studies and communicating with people day to day. Her positive outlook helped overcome the difficulties quickly and she soon got settled. She said: "Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan city that I hope will expand my horizons, help me acquire top business skills and gain an international perspective."

Cultural experience

Wei Huiying is a 19-year-old from Guangxi, and she finds the cultural diversity in Hong Kong surprising. She hopes she can learn to take a different perspective when confronted with decisions or problems. "The standard of living here is far higher than it is in my hometown. I simply couldn’t have afforded to study here without this scholarship. I have to thank SHKP for making it possible," she said.

Positive attitudes

The women each have their aspirations. Deng said: "I want to become a successful businessperson and work for SHKP after graduation." Wei said: "I want to save money to go abroad on an exchange programme for a year, so I can experience different cultures and improve my English."
